I have been in the military since I was 17. I served in the Army Reserve in North Dakota for 10 years then moved to California after returning from Operation Desert Storm. I switched to the California Army National Guard and have worked Full Time with the guard since 2002. I have served as a Admin Clerk and now as a Supply Sergeant. I am currently assigned to the 1113th Transportation Company from San Jose, CA. My previous assignment was with the 746th Quartermaster Battalion in Van Nuys which is where I live. I volunteered to deploy with the 1113th and temporarily relocated to San Jose in January 2007. We are currently deployed at Camp My involvement with Operation Gratitude is by pure luck on my part. I was assigned to Van Nuys Armory and one of our units was deployed so my fellow donations but were struggling to get them in the mail. Through a contact at the Bob Hope in what she was doing - making care packages. When she came to the want to use in what she was doing - making care packages. When she came to the armory I just happened to be the one to open the door and greet her. We started talking and I told her what we were doing and with the struggles I was having. When she returned we came up with some concept ideas and presented it to our Battalion Commander and he approved. Operation Gratitude started with about 40 volunteers and some soldiers to assist and today it has grown nation wide and is talked about at all the bases here in Iraq. It has been my privilege to be part of Operation Gratitude. Having been deployed previously, I knew the importance of receiving mail and knowing that the support back home is there and strong. Upon my return home it will be my renewed ambition to continue to speak on behalf of Operation Gratitude and I look forward to attending the Shasta Salute to America event.
